It's The Rule Book Dec 02, 2009
By Daniel G. Lebryk It is the USGA rule book, in all its glory; presented in a beautiful little volume. It is the ideal book to carry in your golf bag. It is a tiny bit large to carry in a pocket.
The binding is beautiful. The cover is rugged. The gold edging of the pages is classy. The pages are printed on fairly thin paper, a bit thicker than the common Bible type paper.
The USGA will never be accused of writing a rule book that is fun to read. But, the rules are the rules. Yes it reads a little bit like a tax form or a legal document. All these documents are written very carefully with absolute clarity, removing any ambiguity. The front section is the real golf play rules. The back section is about club design and what is specifically allowed. The printing date is 2008, and the book does include website references.
Many years ago I played golf with somebody that carried this little book. I was always amazed at how Jeff would pull this book out at least once during every round. He always quoted it in a loving caring manner, 'did you know...' started each mention of the book. He was also very careful to never call anyone on a rule with the book if he thought somebody did something wrong. He would typically start a round with, 'did you know that you can loan somebody a club, but they cannot return it to you without a 500 stroke penalty?' We all learned a lot from his 'did you knows...'
